It's sweet, malty goodness.

What's not to like? It has sweet notes of caramel and butterscotch all wrapped up in malted milk ball notes. Grab a bottle if you find one, but stay within price range.

The Story

Seems like lately we’ve been reviewing bottles that gained cult fame status on Instagram. Spoiler alert: this is another.

We hadn’t heard anything about this brand before seeing it pop up on our IG newsfeed. Sadly, that was the only way we could learn more about the brand since they didn’t distribute to our state (and I believe that remains true today). So there we were, watching our friends pop Kings County bottles while we waited for more craft brands to make it to our state. We’re still waiting on so many more.

But eventually we hit pay dirt when a trip down to the Bluegrass State proved to be the providence we needed to get our grubby hands on a bottle. Needless to say we were rather excited to acquire one – even though it was probably a year after Kings County hit the IG scene hard.

According to their website, Kings County Distillery is New York City’s oldest and largest whiskey distillery, in addition to being the first since Prohibition.

For their Straight Bourbon expression they utilize 80% New York corn and 20% English Golden Promise barley, which is then double pot stilled and aged in new charred oak barrels for anywhere from 3-6 years. The bottle is 90 proof.

So let’s get into this one and see how it tastes.

Nose

The nose is caramel forward but with a touch of milk chocolate and baking spice.

Palate

The palate stays true to the nose with those sweet flavors shining through, including butterscotch and caramel.

Finish

Towards the end of the palate and into the finish there was a prominent malted milk ball note, and the taste ends with a touch of baking spice and just the tiniest hint of smoke.

Verdict

This bottle was about $70 for us and we’re not at all disappointed that we paid that sum, given the lovely array of flavors from this expression. We think you’ll enjoy it too, so  definitely grab it if you see it on shelves in your area. You’ll likely be pleased with the purchase so long as you stick to a $70-$85 range.

Overall, we’re going to give Kings County Straight Bourbon Whiskey a 7.9 out of 10. Cheers, friends!
