Method
- Add the aromatic, orange bitters, demerara syrup and whiskey directly to the glass. stir briefly to incorporate ingredients.
- Drop in a large ice cube and stir for 10 seconds.
- Express the lemon peel over top of the cocktail, then circle it around the rim before dropping it in the side of the glass.
- Do the same for the orange peel.
Note: You can always mix an Old Fashioned in a cocktail mixing glass too, which will provide the necessary dilution before adding your large cube. Building in the glass is just a faster and similarly delicious way to enjoy your Old Fashioned. Either option is totally fine!
Absolutely, we make our own Demerara syrup which is very simple! It’s 2:1 ratio, so 2 cups of Demerara sugar to 1 cup of water. Put those two ingredients in a saucepan on the stovetop and stir until the sugar dissolves in the water. Allow to cool. You only need a bar spoon (a teaspoon) of it in your Old Fashioned. Then for the orange bitters we like Regan’s No. 6 and aromatic is always Angostura for us. I love old fashioned. I’ve been taking a short cut mixing rye whiskey or bourbon with premade old fashioned mix. I want to try making it from scratch. You recommend the whiskey to use but not the other parts. Which brand of demerara syrup, orange bitters, and aromatic bitters do you recommend?
Thanks,
Reza
