Packs a uniquely fruity punch.

For the price, this bottle has a lot to offer; it's fruit-forward, with an intriguingly bright and sweet profile overall, with just a touch of funk that's not off putting in the least. If you can find this one, we'd suggest grabbing it.

The Story

I used to live on the west side of Michigan and to say that there’s a ‘beer scene’ would be an understatement.

They are absolutely crazy over craft beer, and rightfully so; Founder’s Brewing, Bell’s Brewing, New Holland Brewing and a handful of other incredible breweries are all within a half hour radius of one another. It’s truly an experience, and if you’re a craft beer nut, then I would absolutely suggest spending some time there. This isn’t an article about beer, but it’s important to understand the origins of, well, Dragon’s Milk Origin. People are superfans of the Dragon’s Milk Stout lineup, so it stands to reason that they would introduce a product that uses the same name for their newest bourbon offering.

So let’s talk about this new offering. It’s aged 5+ years, is offered at 95 proof and has a corn, rye, and high malted barley mashbill. It is batched in 100 barrels or less which definitely seems rather “small batch”.

So let’s pop this one open and see what it has to offer.

Nose

It’s very sweet and fruity on the nose, with some floral and perfume aromas and rounding out with cinnamon.

Palate

Off the bat it starts off with typical bourbon notes of vanilla and caramel but quickly transitions to bright fruit notes. They were somewhat tough to place, but the most specific fruit we could identify was pineapple.

Finish

The finish is rather dry and has a bit of a funk to it, with those sweet notes lingering on the tongue with a medium finish overall.

Verdict

This bottle is pretty unique overall, and we really like to have those types of bottles on hand.

It’s a different profile altogether, but the uniqueness and fruit-forward experience was reminiscent of something like Seagrass. It’s just a totally different take on bourbon which makes it exciting and interesting.

At $45, you really can’t go wrong on this one. Honestly I don’t think we’ve reviewed a single bottle with pineapple notes up to this point, so that alone was a very cool aspect. We would absolutely recommend this bottle at the current price point.

We’re giving Dragon’s Milk Origin a 7.7 out of 10.
